Swea City Ambulance Service
Volunteer services are finding it more and more challenging to
meet the demands of their communities and to maintain a roster
of qualified personnel ready to respond to the needs of their
citizens at a moment’s notice. Services in many of Iowa’s
communities are being forced to limit their response abilities
and pass that responsibility on to larger neighboring services.
Some have even had to close their doors and cease operations,
leaving their communities wondering who will care for them in
their time of need.
This is not the case in Swea City, Iowa. In this rural
community of just over 500 people in Northwest Iowa, their
ambulance service continues to grow. When neighboring
communities struggled to keep their ambulance services staffed
to respond to calls, Swea City stepped in to help provide that
service, going so far as to obtain a second ambulance and a
quick response vehicle. The Swea City Ambulance Service is able
to guarantee a response to calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year, and does so with some of the most highly skilled and
compassionate caregivers I’ve had the pleasure of working with
as partners in Kossuth County.
Their community consistently has volunteers stepping forward
to enroll in EMS courses in order to serve as part of the
ambulance crew, and their members are continually striving to
learn and achieve more. The Swea City Ambulance Service has been
able to accomplish all of this thanks to their outstanding
leadership, unmatched dedication of their volunteers, and
overwhelming community support.
