Mary Greeley Medical Center (MICS)
In 2019 the oldest paramedic service in Iowa, Mary
Greeley Mobile Intensive Care Services (MICS), celebrates its
fortieth birthday. Mary Greeley’s commitment to safety,
education, and patient-centered care in the past year have made
them deserving of this award and I would like to take this
opportunity to nominate them for IEMSA’s EMS Career Service of
the Year.
Mary Greeley takes great pride in being the oldest
paramedic-level ambulance service in the state and in being the
first service in Iowa to have offline protocols. Blending that
history with progressive ideas, Mary Greeley paramedics have
refocused on safety and quality which lead to the design of a
safer, more efficient ambulance. Mary Greeley paramedics have
also expanded their ability to provide service to their
community by staffing additional ambulances in areas of need and
training many members of the department to the level of critical
care paramedic.
In addition to providing 9-1-1 coverage and critical care
transfer services, MICS is the only ambulance service in Iowa to
host its own training center. From their beginnings as host of
the first paramedic class in Iowa, MICS has worked in 2019 to
expand its ability to provide EMS education to their community
by the creation of a new education coordinator position. With
the improved ability to focus on education and training, they
are now teaching two EMT courses and have begun to offer several
NAEMT courses as they look to continue to be a leader in EMS.
In appreciation of the fortieth year of high-quality
emergency medical care that MICS has been able to provide and of
their continued leadership in EMS, I would like to thank Mary
Greeley’s MICS for their many, many years of quality service.
